A Sun-Tolerant Performer with Broad Tropical Leaves

Halderman (Caladium bicolor ‘Halderman’) is a versatile, sun-tolerant fancy-leaf caladium that thrives across a wide range of light conditions — from full sun to filtered shade. Growing 1–2 feet tall with broad leaves and a tidy spread, it’s an excellent choice for borders, window boxes, entryways, and containers. Like all caladiums, it excels at bringing bold tropical color to spaces where flowering plants struggle.

Plant Highlights

  • Leaf type: Fancy leaf — broad, heart-shaped
  • Scientific name: Caladium bicolor ‘Halderman’
  • Height: 1–2 feet
  • Spread: Up to 1 foot
  • Light: Full sun, part sun, filtered shade, or morning sun — highly adaptable
  • USDA Zones: 9–11 (lift tubers in fall in colder zones)
  • Great for: Borders, window boxes, entryways, containers, shaded porches
  • Thrives in: Heat and humidity

How to Plant Caladium Bulbs

For early sprouting, plant tubers in pots indoors in March. Transplant to outdoor beds or larger containers when night temperatures are consistently 60°F or above — typically around May 15. Avoid cold, wet soils — tubers rot quickly in those conditions. Plant in well-draining, moist soil with the knobby side (eyes) facing up.

Care Tips

  • Soil: Fertile, well-draining; amend with compost or topsoil at planting time
  • Water: Moderate when first planted; keep moist but not waterlogged once established
  • Fertilizer: Occasional liquid fertilizer during the growing season; use sparingly to preserve leaf color over green
  • De-eyeing: Remove primary sprouts before planting for shorter, bushier, fuller growth
  • Sun tip: In sunny locations, provide some afternoon shade during the hottest part of the day to protect foliage
  • Winter storage: In zones below 9, dig tubers in fall and store in a dry, airy place until spring

Halderman is a reliable, attractive caladium that performs beautifully in both sunny and shaded garden settings — an excellent all-rounder for tropical foliage lovers.
