Striking Pink Edges on Deep Green — A Shade Garden Superstar

Postman Joyner is a classic fancy-leaf caladium with eye-catching contrast: vivid pink edges frame deep green leaves, creating a dramatic two-tone effect that performs beautifully in shaded borders and container gardens. Native to the South American rain forests, caladiums like Postman Joyner have become landscape favorites for their brilliant colors, large heart-shaped leaves, and unmatched ability to bring life and color to shaded spaces.

Plant Highlights

  • Leaf type: Fancy leaf — large, heart-shaped
  • Colors: Striking pink edges on deep green leaves
  • Light: Mostly shady to partial shade — great color in the shade
  • USDA Zones: 9–11 (lift tubers in fall in colder zones)
  • Pack: 6 bulbs per order
  • Great for: Shaded borders, containers, hanging baskets, ground cover under trees
  • Thrives in: Heat and humidity

How to Plant Caladium Bulbs

Plant tubers eyes upward, 1–1½ inches deep — one tuber per 4” pot, or 3 tubers in a gallon-size container. Cover with about 1½ inches of soil and keep evenly moist and warm. Do not plant in cold soil — wait until ground temperature reaches 65°F (typically May in the south, mid-May to mid-June in northern areas). For earlier color, pre-sprout indoors 4–6 weeks before moving outdoors.

Care Tips

  • Soil: Moist, well-draining mix with organic content; avoid cold, wet soils
  • Water: Keep evenly moist; liquid fertilizer during the growing season boosts lush growth (they respond like African violets to regular feeding)
  • Light: Mostly shady areas; some filtered light enhances color
  • Containers: Ideal for pots — start indoors, move outside when warm, bring back in when cold snaps arrive in fall
  • Ground cover: Spectacular when massed under trees or in shaded garden beds
  • Winter storage: In zones below 9, let tops die down after first cold snap; store pots in a non-freezing area until spring

Six bulbs per order — enough to create a full container planting or a bold drift of color in a shaded garden bed.
