Bring effortless elegance to the spring garden with Dutch Iris 'Light Blue' — a classic cut-flower iris prized for its luminous, soft-blue petals and striking yellow-throated falls. Slender and upright at 50 cm tall, these bulbs naturalize beautifully in borders, raised beds, and large containers, and they're equally stunning in fresh-cut bouquets and floral arrangements.

Plant Details

  • Color: Light blue with yellow throat
  • Height: 50 cm (≈ 20")
  • Flowering Period: May – June
  • Bulb Size: 7/8 cm
  • Exposure: Full sun to partial shade
  • Hardiness: Zones 5–9
  • Best Use: Cut flowers, borders, containers, mass plantings

Planting Instructions

  • Plant in autumn for spring blooms.
  • Choose a site with well-draining soil — Dutch iris bulbs will rot in waterlogged conditions.
  • Plant bulbs 4" deep and 3" apart, pointed end up.
  • Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
  • In warmer climates, foliage emerges in fall; flowers follow in spring. In colder regions, both foliage and flowers emerge after winter ends.

After Bloom Care

  • Cut flowers freely for bouquets — it won't harm the plant.
  • Leave foliage in place after blooming; it fuels next season's bulbs through photosynthesis.
  • Water about 1" per week during active growth.
  • Allow leaves to yellow and die back naturally in summer — this signals healthy dormancy.
  • Remove spent foliage once fully browned.

Container Growing

Plant in large containers with quality, well-draining potting mix. Ensure adequate drainage holes. Space bulbs 2–3" apart at 4" depth. Pair with low-growing annuals or spring bulbs to fill the space around their slender stems.
