Crisp, elegant, and effortlessly reliable, Dutch Iris 'White Excelsior' produces pure white blooms with soft golden-yellow throat markings — a classic combination that works beautifully alone in a white garden or mixed with other Dutch iris varieties. Flowering in late spring, it bridges the gap between spring and summer plants while attracting butterflies and making exceptional cut flowers. Plant once and enjoy a showy display year after year.

Planting Instructions

  • Plant in fall for May–June blooms.
  • Choose a full sun location with well-draining soil. Amend with compost, peat moss, or ground bark if drainage is poor.
  • Plant bulbs 5" deep and 2" apart (or 2–3" apart in containers), pointed end up.
  • Water well after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs.
  • In warmer climates, foliage emerges in fall and flowers develop in spring. In colder regions, both emerge after winter.

After Bloom Care

  • Cut flowers freely for spring bouquets — long-lasting and vase-ready.
  • Leave foliage in place after blooming; it fuels next year's growth through photosynthesis.
  • Water about 1" per week during active growth.
  • Allow leaves to yellow and die back naturally in summer, then remove spent foliage.
  • Bulbs can be left in place year after year for a reliably showy display.

Container Growing

Plant in large containers with quality, well-draining potting mix. Ensure adequate drainage holes. Space bulbs 2–3" apart at 5" depth. Pair with low-growing spring bulbs or annuals to complement their tall, slim stems.
