Purple Blooms with a Crisp White Edge

Purple Rain tulips bring purple flowers edged in white to the spring garden. Their shapely blooms create a striking contrast in borders and patio containers, and add an elegant accent to cut-flower arrangements.

Plant an informal group near your entryway or beside a garden path, where the two-tone petals can be appreciated up close. Cut a few stems to bring that spring color indoors.

What You Are Ordering

  • Product: Tulip bulbs for planting, not seeds or flowering potted plants.
  • Selection: Purple Rain.
  • Pack options: Choose 10, 25, or 100 bulbs from the available sizes.
  • Flower color: Purple with white edges.
  • Planting season: Fall.
  • Bloom season: Spring; exact timing varies with local climate and weather.

Choosing a Planting Location

Choose full sun or very light shade and fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid areas that stay wet after rain. Use in beds, borders, cutting gardens, or containers with drainage holes.

Fall Planting and Care

  1. Keep bulbs cool and dry until planting.
  2. Plant in fall before the ground freezes, with pointed ends facing upward.
  3. Use the planting depth on the bulb label. As a general guide, set bulbs approximately two to three times their height deep, allowing for bulb size and local soil conditions.
  4. Space large bulbs approximately 5–6 inches apart and arrange in clusters for a fuller-looking display.
  5. Water after planting to settle the soil. During growth, water as needed without keeping the bulbs waterlogged.

Tulips need a winter chilling period for flowering. In mild-winter areas, seek local planting and prechilling guidance. If chilling bulbs, keep them dry and away from ripening fruit.

After Flowering

Remove faded flower heads to prevent seed formation, but leave green leaves intact. Allow foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it so the leaves can replenish the bulbs.

Avoid persistently wet soil during summer dormancy. Repeat flowering depends on growing conditions and is not guaranteed. Many gardeners plant fresh tulip bulbs each fall for a consistent spring display.

Protecting Your Planting

Tulips are not deer-resistant. Deer may browse foliage and flowers, while squirrels, voles, and other small mammals may disturb or eat bulbs. Use suitable protection where these animals are active.

Ornamental use only: Do not eat tulip bulbs or other plant parts. Keep bulbs away from children and pets; tulips are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.
