Jamaican Scotch Bonnet Live Pepper Plant – Capsicum chinense | Authentic Heirloom

Jamaican Scotch Bonnet (Capsicum chinense) is one of the most iconic and culturally important peppers in the world — the heart and soul of Caribbean cooking. Rated significantly hotter than most habaneros at 100,000–350,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), the Scotch Bonnet is distinguished not just by its heat but by its uniquely sweet, fruity aroma and complex flavor that no other pepper can replicate. The name comes from the pepper’s resemblance to the Scottish tam o’shanter hat — a round, bonnet-like cap shape also described in Jamaica as “cup and saucer.”

These plants are grown from genuine Jamaican heirloom seeds with deep generational roots — varieties passed down and preserved over decades, not the yellow or orange habanero varieties sometimes mislabeled as Scotch Bonnet in the commercial market. Mature peppers ripen to bright yellow, orange, or red and measure approximately 1½–2 inches in diameter.

Culinary Uses

Scotch Bonnet is irreplaceable in authentic Jamaican and Caribbean cooking — its unique sweet heat is the defining flavor behind some of the most beloved dishes in the region:

  • Jerk seasoning — Scotch Bonnet is the essential pepper in authentic jerk pork, jerk chicken, and jerk fish
  • Peppered shrimp — a Jamaican street food classic from Middle Quarters
  • Curried goat — a whole bonnet simmered in the pot releases heat and fragrance without overwhelming the dish
  • Rice and peas, stews, and soups — adds depth, color, and Caribbean character
  • Jamaican patties — the pepper heat inside a flaky golden pastry
  • Hot sauces and pepper mash — Scotch Bonnet-based sauces are the gold standard of Caribbean condiments
  • Historically used as a meat preservative before refrigeration — the origin of Jerk cooking in Boston Bay, Jamaica

Growing Guide

  • Sun: Full sun (6–8+ hours daily). Scotch Bonnets thrive in hot, sunny conditions.
  • Soil: Rich, well-draining soil. At planting, add a generous shovel of compost to the planting hole. Side-dress with compost or feed with compost tea every few weeks for the first 6 weeks.
  • Mulching: Apply a 1–2 inch layer of compost mulch around each plant to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
  • Watering: Water consistently and deeply. Peppers prefer evenly moist soil — not waterlogged.
  • Containers: Use 5-gallon containers minimum to prevent root crowding. Container-grown Scotch Bonnets can produce fruit year-round indoors in cooler climates.
  • Climate: Thrives in warm tropical and subtropical climates. In temperate zones, grow in containers and bring indoors before frost.

About These Plants

These Scotch Bonnet plants are propagated from heirloom seed stock with deep Caribbean roots — heritage varieties selected for authentic shape, color, flavor, and heat over many growing seasons. Each plant is started in a 3-inch pot and ready to transplant into your garden or a larger container upon arrival.
