This fast-growing climber is commonly known as the Black-Eyed Susan Vine, featuring large orange blooms with black eyes against heart-shaped foliage. Use it to decorate gates, fences, and other structures.
Thunbergia Black Eyed Susan vine grows best in full sun. They needs average, well-drained soil. Plant seedlings 3 inches away from supports. Netting or strings make good trellis material. Solid fencing or large posts will need trellis material for the vine to climb. Space plants 8 - 12 inches apart. Pinch the tips of young Black-Eyed Susan plants to encourage branching. In areas of no frost, Thunbergia will grow as a perennial. In colder climates, grow it as an annual, sowing the Thunbergia Alata seeds each year. If grown in a container, Black-Eyed Susan plants can be wintered indoors in a bright, sunny window.
How To Grow Thunbergia From Seed: It is recommended to soak the Black-eyed Susan vine seeds over night in tepid water. Following the soaking, sow Thunbergia seeds outdoors after the last frost in prepared seed bed. Or, to get a jump start on the growing season, sow Thunbergia seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before outdoor planting. Thunbergia flower seeds germinate better in darkness.
