Size: 1 Packet-1000 Seeds

Bring tender-crisp texture to your salad bowl with Buttercrunch lettuce. This butterhead variety forms loose heads of dark green leaves around a pale, creamy heart. Pick a few outer leaves for a sandwich or harvest a whole head for a fresh garden salad.

Bulk sizes are sold by weight. Seed counts in weight-based packs vary by lot.

When to sow

Grow during cool, mild weather. Sow in early spring when the soil can be worked, or start indoors for transplanting. Begin a fall crop in late summer, adjusting timing to your local climate and protecting seedlings from excessive heat.

Lettuce can become bitter or bolt in hot conditions. Plan harvests before prolonged heat where possible; no variety is immune to heat stress.

Starting from seed

  1. Prepare a fine seedbed or fill clean modules with moist seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow shallowly, pressing seeds onto the surface and covering very lightly. Light helps lettuce germination.
  3. Water gently and maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging.
  4. Keep seed trays out of excessive heat and provide bright light as seedlings develop.
  5. Thin or transplant to approximately 10–12 inches apart for heads, allowing airflow and room to grow.

Gradually acclimate indoor-grown seedlings to outdoor conditions before transplanting. For containers, use a well-drained potting mix and a pot with drainage holes.

Growing care

  • Provide sun during cool weather; light afternoon shade can help during warmer periods.
  • Keep soil evenly moist to support tender leaves.
  • Weed carefully around the shallow roots.
  • Feed according to soil needs and the label directions on a fertilizer suitable for vegetables.
  • Inspect regularly for slugs, aphids, and damaged leaves.

Make small successive sowings while conditions remain suitable to spread the harvest rather than having every head ready at once.

Harvesting

Pick a modest number of outer leaves once plants have enough growth, leaving the center intact. For whole heads, cut at the base when they reach your preferred size and before a flowering stalk develops. Harvest timing and repeat leaf production depend on growing conditions.

From garden to table

Wash leaves thoroughly in clean water and dry gently. Use the tender leaves in salads and sandwiches or as small lettuce wraps. Refrigerate promptly and use while crisp and fresh.

Seed storage

Store unused seeds sealed in a cool, dry, dark place away from moisture and temperature extremes. Seeds supplied are for planting, not direct consumption.
