Castilleja integra, or wholeleaf Indian paintbrush, is a drought tolerant perennial with crimson, scarlet, and red blossoms perfect for attracting various birds, bees, and butterflies. Castilleja integra is a larval host for multiple butterfly species in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 7. This perennial plant has a woody root and leafy stems growing up to 16 inches tall. The stems are topped by crimson, floral spikes. The flowers themselves are greenish, tinged scarlet, and are mostly hidden by the showy crimson, or sometimes yellowish, bracts. Narrow, unlobed, undivided leaves line the stems.
The roots of this plant will grow until they touch the roots of other plants, frequently grasses, penetrating these host roots to obtain a portion of their nutrients. Transplanting paintbrush may kill it.
Maximize success by sowing seeds during winter or early spring and allowing them to experience cold and moist conditions. Gently cover seeds with sand or fine grit, at a depth similar to their size. If germination doesn't occur within 4 to 12 weeks, place the damp seed tray in the refrigerator for four weeks to provide cold treatment. Be patient as it may take several months for these semi-parasitic seeds to grow. Consider growing some grass seeds in the tray to aid in their growth.
