Native to Mexico and Central America, Mexican marigold flowers spread to North Africa with explorers and have gained popularity in the area. Due to their beauty and purifying properties, these flowers are often found in households and temples in South Asia. As a companion plant, gardeners in vegetable gardens rely on this species to prevent diseases and harmful pests. Its genus name "Tagetes" comes from Tages, an ancient deity who emerged from the ground. Seeds per Ounce: 8,500

Sowing: Grow Crackerjack African marigold by direct sowing seeds in spring, planting just below the surface of the soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination occurs, usually within 5-10 days. For best results, start the seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost of spring in a high humidity environment with temperatures around 70 degrees F.

Growing: Water seedlings intermittently until they establish themselves; fully grown plants can withstand some dry spells, but watering during particularly arid weather will enhance their flower production. Prune the developing stems to promote a fuller appearance. Removing spent blooms will result in ongoing flowering. This species is appealing to bees and butterflies and will naturally spread in favorable environments. It is a superb selection for lining a garden bed or cultivating in pots.

Harvesting: Select freshly opened flower stems for cut flowers. Remove any leaves that will dip below the water line and place them in water promptly.
