Planting

Plant outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked and severe freezing conditions have passed. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Set plants upright with the roots covered and the growing point near the soil surface. Space plants approximately 4 to 6 inches apart for bulb development, with wider spacing between rows.

Care

Water consistently during establishment and active bulb growth, but avoid saturated soil. Keep the planting area weeded so the shallow onion roots do not have to compete for moisture and nutrients. Reduce watering as the bulbs mature and the tops begin to fall naturally.

Harvest and Curing

Harvest when the tops fall over and begin to dry. Lift bulbs carefully, shake off loose soil, and cure them in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated place. Do not wash bulbs before curing. Once the outer skins and necks are dry, trim and store in a cool, dry location with airflow.
