What makes waxed amaryllis different?

The wax coating allows the prepared bulb to be displayed without potting it first. Do not water or submerge the waxed bulb. It relies on energy and moisture stored inside the bulb for its initial display. This is different from caring for an ordinary amaryllis bulb growing in soil.

Indoor display and care

• Place upright on a stable, dry surface in bright, indirect light.
• Choose a comfortably warm indoor location, away from freezing temperatures, heating vents, and hot direct sun.
• Keep the wax intact during the initial display and do not add soil or fertilizer.
• Turn the bulb periodically to encourage balanced growth toward the light.
• Support a tall flower stalk if necessary, taking care not to puncture the bulb.

When will it bloom?

The previous listing estimated flowering in approximately 4–8 weeks. Treat this as a guide rather than a guaranteed schedule: timing varies with the bulb's growth stage on arrival, indoor temperature, and light. Order ahead if the display is intended for a particular occasion, and do not assume blooms will open on a specific holiday.

After flowering

Remove faded flowers and keep the display in a suitable indoor location while any remaining buds develop. Waxed bulbs are generally intended for a seasonal display. Removing the wax does not guarantee that the bulb will root, survive, or bloom again.

If you want to attempt growing it on, carefully remove the wax after flowering and inspect the base. Only a bulb with a viable basal plate has a reasonable chance of forming roots. If the base is intact, pot in a container with drainage and well-drained potting mix, leaving the upper portion of the bulb exposed. Keep in bright light, water cautiously until roots and active growth develop, and leave healthy green foliage to replenish the bulb. Discard a bulb that becomes soft or rotten.
