Jamaican White Sorrel Seeds
Grow a white-stem form of Jamaican sorrel, Hibiscus sabdariffa, for its attractive foliage, flowers, and fleshy calyxes. This warm-season plant fits Caribbean kitchen gardens, edible landscapes, and sunny ornamental beds.
Plant Details
- Botanical name: Hibiscus sabdariffa
- Common name: Jamaican sorrel
- Feature: White-stem form
- Light: Full sun
- Soil: Fertile and well drained
- Climate: Warm growing conditions with protection from frost
Starting the Seeds
Sow indoors before the last expected frost or direct sow after the soil has warmed. Plant approximately 1/4 inch deep in a moist, well-drained seed-starting mix. Keep warm and evenly moist without waterlogging. Harden seedlings off gradually before transplanting outdoors.
Growing and Harvesting
Choose a sunny site with room for the plants to develop. Water consistently during establishment, then adjust for rainfall and soil conditions. Harvest calyxes after the flowers fade and the fleshy covering develops around the seed capsule.
Kitchen Use
Fresh or dried sorrel calyxes are traditionally steeped with spices to prepare Jamaican sorrel drink. They can also bring a tart flavor to syrups, sauces, preserves, and other recipes. Confirm plant identification and follow safe food-handling practices before culinary use.
Available in packages of 10, 25, 100, or 1,000 seeds.
