- Mix: Red, white, and yellow onions; the proportion of each color may vary.
- Pack options: 30 bulbs, 1 lb of bulbs, or 5 lbs.
- Approximate count: 100–130 sets per pound; bulb size and counts vary.
Planting Your Onion Sets
Prepare a bed with rich soil, incorporating compost or humus before planting. Plant sets with the pointed end facing upward, about 1–2 inches deep. Allow 4–6 inches between plants when growing full-size bulbs.
For a closer initial planting, space sets 2–3 inches apart, then thin them as they grow. Use the thinnings as green onions and leave the remaining plants room to develop.
Care During Growth
Keep the soil consistently moist during early growth. Reduce watering as the bulbs approach full size. Choose fertilizer appropriate to your soil and follow its application instructions rather than overfeeding.
When and How to Harvest
Harvest mature bulbs when the tops naturally fall over and the leaf tips begin to brown. Lift the onions gently and shake off loose soil. Do not wash them before curing or remove the protective outer skins.
Curing and Storage
Cure harvested onions in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated place for several days to about two weeks, depending on conditions. Once dry, trim the roots and tops, leaving approximately 1 inch of stem, and brush away remaining soil.
Store cured bulbs in a cool, dry, ventilated location. Check regularly and use any onions showing signs of sprouting or softening first. Storage life varies with the onion variety, curing, and storage conditions.
Before ordering: Select your preferred pack size. These are planting bulbs; final harvest size and timing depend on your climate and growing conditions.
