The Irreplaceable Mexican Kitchen Herb — Bold, Aromatic & Medicinal
Epazote (Chenopodium ambrosioides) is one of the most distinctive and essential herbs in Mexican and Latin American cooking — a bold, complex herb with tones of lemon, savory, and mint that is utterly irreplaceable in bean dishes, tamales, quesadillas, and traditional soups. 100% organic, open-pollinated, heirloom, non-hybrid, and Non-GMO. Grows in all zones.
Why Grow Epazote?
- Essential Mexican Flavoring: A staple herb in Mexican cuisine with a distinctive, pungent aroma — particularly famous for its anti-flatulent properties when added to bean dishes.
- Medicinal Heritage: Used for centuries as a healing herb with digestive, anti-parasitic, and anti-inflammatory traditional applications.
- Easy Succession Planting: Sow every 2–3 weeks for a continuous supply of fresh leaves throughout spring and summer.
- Adaptable to All Zones: Annual in Zones 2–7; perennial in warmer zones. Grows 2–4 feet tall in full sun.
- Great for Containers: Thrives in pots and can be brought indoors in winter in cooler climates.
Growing Guide
Plant outdoors in spring after all frost danger has passed, once night temperatures are consistently above 50°F. Full sun, average well-drained soil. Harvest leaves at any point after plants are established — best picked in the morning after dew dries. Air dry leaves on screens or hang stems in bunches upside down to store.
