Cuban Oregano Seeds

Grow Cuban oregano, a strongly aromatic herb also known as broadleaf thyme, Spanish thyme, Indian borage, and Mexican mint. Its thick, softly textured leaves have a bold savory fragrance and can be used in Caribbean, Latin American, and Asian-inspired cooking.

Seed Details

  • Botanical name: Plectranthus amboinicus
  • Product: Herb seeds
  • Also known as: Broadleaf thyme, Spanish thyme, Indian borage, and Mexican mint
  • Growth habit: Fleshy, branching herb with aromatic leaves
  • Culinary uses: Beans, meats, poultry, soups, stews, sauces, marinades, and seasoning blends

Starting Seeds

Sow on or near the surface of a moist, sterile seed-starting mix and press gently into place. Cover only lightly, since small seeds can struggle beneath deep soil. Provide warmth, bright light, and gentle, consistent moisture without saturating the mix. Germination time and rate vary with temperature, moisture, light, and seed-starting conditions.

Transplanting and Care

Move seedlings into individual pots after they are large enough to handle. Use a loose, well-drained potting mix and containers with drainage holes. Gradually acclimate plants before placing them outdoors after frost danger has passed.

Provide bright light or partial sun and allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Avoid constantly wet soil. Pinch the growing tips to encourage branching, and feed lightly during active growth according to the directions on a balanced fertilizer.

Harvest and Seasonal Care

Harvest individual leaves or trim tender stem tips as needed, leaving enough growth for the plant to recover. The flavor is concentrated, so begin with a small amount in recipes and adjust to taste. Cuban oregano is frost sensitive; move container plants into a bright, frost-free location before cold weather.

Choose from a small packet of approximately 50 seeds or larger seed quantities by weight.
