SIZE: 10 Seeds

Bring a traditional Guatemalan bean to your garden. Piloy Amarillo is a yellow pole bean with rich flavor and a thin skin, well suited to soups, stews, and rice dishes. Pick the beans fresh for shelling or allow the pods to dry for a pantry harvest.

Why grow Piloy Amarillo?

  • Type: Yellow pole bean; give climbing vines sturdy support
  • Origin: Traditional bean from Guatemala
  • Beans: Approximately ½ inch long, with a thin skin
  • Kitchen use: Fresh shell beans or dried beans for soups, stews, and rice
  • Available sizes: 10, 25, or 100 seeds

Planting and care

Direct sow outdoors 1–2 weeks after your average last frost, once soil temperatures are consistently above 65°F. Plant in a sunny spot with a trellis or other sturdy climbing support. Indoor starting is not recommended. For additional harvests, sow again every 7–14 days while the growing season allows, stopping about 60 days before the first fall frost.

Harvest two ways

For fresh shell beans, pick pods when they are plump but before they yellow and dry, then shell them for cooking. For dry beans, leave pods on the vine until pods and beans are fully dry and hard before shelling and storing. Imagine a pot of warm bean stew made with beans grown right outside your kitchen.
