Grow Dwarf Grey Sugar snow pea seeds for sweet, crisp edible pods and tender pea shoots on compact plants. This open-pollinated heirloom pairs a productive cool-season harvest with striking purple and bicolored flowers. Pick the pale green pods while flat for a quick stir-fry, or harvest young growing tips for fresh, sweet pea flavor.
Variety Highlights
- Botanical name: Pisum sativum.
- Variety: Dwarf Grey Sugar, an open-pollinated heirloom snow pea.
- Edible pods: Approximately 2–3 inches long, flat, pale green, sweet, and crisp.
- Plant height: Approximately 28–36 inches (71–91 cm).
- Flowers and foliage: Purple and bicolored flowers with red-purple tinges on green foliage and stems.
- Harvest: Approximately 60–65 days to snow pea pods, depending on conditions.
- Growing range: USDA Zones 3–9 as a cool-season annual.
- Multiple harvest uses: Edible pods, young leaves, tender stems, shoot tips, and flowers.
Sowing and Planting
Direct sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Peas favor cool growing conditions; germination is slower in very cold soil. A late-summer or early-fall sowing can provide another crop where the local season allows enough time before severe cold.
- Sowing depth: 1 inch.
- Seed spacing: 2 inches apart.
- Row spacing: 24–30 inches apart.
- Light: Full sun.
- Germination temperature: 45–75°F.
- Typical germination: 7–14 days under suitable conditions.
Growing and Support
Keep the seedbed consistently moist without waterlogging. Although the dwarf plants can grow without a tall trellis, short pea netting, stakes, or twiggy brush help keep stems upright, improve airflow, and make pods easier to pick.
Peas can be included in mixed vegetable beds alongside carrots, brassicas, cucumbers, and radishes. Plan spacing so neighboring crops do not shade or crowd the pea plants.
Container Growing Instructions
- Choose a suitable pot: Use a roomy container with drainage holes and space for roots and a short support.
- Use container mix: Fill with a well-draining potting mix suitable for edible crops.
- Sow directly: Plant seeds 1 inch deep, using the seed spacing above as a starting point and avoiding overcrowding.
- Support early: Install short netting or stakes before stems need support.
- Manage moisture: Check regularly, especially in wind or warm weather. Water thoroughly when needed and let excess water drain.
- Choose the season: Place in full sun during cool weather and avoid the hottest part of summer for best performance.
Harvesting Pods and Pea Shoots
Harvest snow pea pods while flat, before the peas inside begin to bulge. Pods become tougher if left too long, so pick frequently to encourage continued production. Harvesting in the morning helps preserve crispness.
For pea shoots, also called dou miao, snip the top 3–4 inches of tender new growth once plants are established, leaving enough foliage for regrowth. Plants may branch after cutting. If both shoots and pods are your goal, reserve some plants for pod production rather than repeatedly cutting every growing tip.
Kitchen Uses
Enjoy washed, tender pods raw in salads and crudités, stir-fried with garlic, ginger, and oyster sauce, or lightly steamed with sesame oil and soy sauce. Add whole pods near the end of cooking soups, hot pots, and noodle dishes. Blanch and freeze surplus pods for later use.
Stir-fry tender pea shoots with garlic and sesame oil, add them to soups, or use as a garnish. The purple flowers can also be used as an edible garnish. Use only correctly identified edible garden peas; do not confuse them with ornamental sweet peas.
