Bright Orange Peppers with a Distinctive Shape

Peter Orange pepper brings bold color and a playful novelty shape to the vegetable garden. This Capsicum annuum variety produces cylindrical, wrinkled pods that ripen to vivid orange. Grow it in a sunny garden bed or a roomy patio container, then use the ripe hot peppers in homemade sauces, dried spice blends, and salsas.

Starting your seeds

Start indoors approximately 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost. Sow 1/4 inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the mix moist without waterlogging and maintain warm soil, approximately 80–85°F. A seedling heat mat can help provide consistent warmth. Germination may take approximately 1–4 weeks.

Growing in beds or containers

Harden seedlings off gradually before transplanting outdoors after frost risk has passed and nights are reliably warm. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Water consistently and mulch around established plants to help retain moisture, keeping mulch away from stems.

For patio growing, choose a container of approximately 5 gallons or larger with drainage holes. Feed according to the instructions on a suitable vegetable fertilizer, and adjust watering to the weather and soil conditions.

Harvest and kitchen uses

Allow fruits to develop their full orange color before harvesting. Snip stems with garden scissors rather than pulling peppers from the plant. Use small amounts at first in sauces and salsas, or dry the ripe peppers for homemade seasoning.

Packet sizes

Choose from the available 10-, 25-, or 100-seed options. Check the selected quantity before ordering.

Hot pepper safety

Wear gloves when cutting or processing peppers. Avoid touching your eyes or other sensitive areas, and wash hands, tools, and work surfaces thoroughly afterward. Keep harvested peppers away from children and pets.
