Rock Cress is an extremely popular rock garden plant, and a familiar sight in the spring garden. It forms a low cushion of evergreen leaves, literally smothered by flowers for several weeks. This strain has flowers in various shades of purple to violet, over grey-green leaves. Plants should be trimmed lightly immediately after blooming, to encourage a thick mounding habit. Excellent choice for a rock garden in sun or part shade, growing over rock walls, or in alpine troughs and other containers.
Rock Cress Aubrieta seeds can be started indoors or outdoors. For indoor sowing, start the Rock Cress seeds 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost. Press the ground cover seed into a good quality starter mix and cover it lightly. Maintain moisture until germination occurs. Transplant the Aubrieta plants into the garden after frost danger has passed. For outdoor sowing, after frost danger is over, prepare a seedbed by loosening the top 2 â 3 inches of soil and weeding. Sow the Aubrieta seeds, lightly covering them, and keep the ground cover seed moist until germination.
