Size: 1 Packet-30 seeds

Grow Emerald okra seeds for smooth, bright-green pods and a steady supply of warm-season vegetables for your kitchen. This spineless variety is a versatile choice for gumbo, Caribbean stews, bhindi dishes, and pickles. Step into the garden for a handful of tender pods and bring their fresh flavor straight to your next meal.

Variety Highlights

  • Botanical name: Abelmoschus esculentus.
  • Variety: Emerald, a spineless okra with smooth green pods.
  • Plant height: Approximately 5 feet under favorable conditions.
  • Growing season: Warm-season crop for sunny vegetable gardens.
  • Approximate maturity: Around 60 days from transplanting, with timing dependent on climate and growing conditions.
  • Harvest character: Pods may remain tender at approximately 5–7 inches; always check tenderness rather than relying on length alone.

Outdoor Sowing

Choose full sun and well-drained soil. Direct sow after all frost danger has passed and the soil is thoroughly warm. Plant seeds approximately 3/4 inch deep and thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart, with rows approximately 3 feet apart.

Starting Indoors

Sow in individual pots approximately 3–4 weeks before your last expected frost. Keep the growing medium warm and moist without waterlogging. Thin to one strong seedling per pot. Gradually harden plants off, then transplant into settled warm weather, handling the roots gently.

Growing and Care

  • Keep the seedbed moist while seedlings establish.
  • Water regularly during pod production, particularly in hot, dry weather.
  • Mulch established plants to help conserve soil moisture and reduce weeds.
  • Leave room for mature growth and easy access for frequent picking.
  • Although this variety is spineless, wear gloves if your skin is sensitive to contact with okra plants.

Container Growing Instructions

Use a large, deep container with drainage holes and enough room for a plant that can reach approximately 5 feet tall. Fill with a well-draining potting mix suitable for edible crops and place in full sun. Avoid crowding several mature plants into a small pot.

Sow approximately 3/4 inch deep or transplant gently at the seedling's original soil level. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Check moisture regularly, as containers dry faster during hot weather. Feed with a fertilizer labeled for container vegetables at the package rate, taking any fertilizer already in the mix into account. Place the pot in a stable location and support the plant if it becomes top-heavy.

Harvesting Tender Pods

Check plants every 1–2 days during peak production. Harvest while pods are tender, picking earlier if they begin to toughen even before reaching 5–7 inches. Cut pods from the plant rather than pulling them. Remove overmature, fibrous pods to help maintain production.

Kitchen Uses

Add young pods to gumbo, soups, Caribbean stews, stir-fries, or bhindi masala. Their natural mucilage helps thicken broths. Enjoy them fried, preserve them using a tested pickling recipe, or blanch and freeze for later meals.
