How to Germinate Golden Drop Seeds:

Onosma echioides seeds can be somewhat challenging but rewarding to germinate. Follow these steps for best results:

  1. Stratification (Optional but Recommended): For improved germination, mix seeds with moist sand in a sealed bag and refrigerate at 35-40°F for 2-4 weeks.
  2. Sowing: Sow seeds on the surface of well-draining, gritty seed mix. Lightly press seeds into the surface but do not cover—they need light to germinate.
  3. Temperature: Maintain soil temperature at 65-70°F during the day. Cool nights (50-55°F) can help improve germination.
  4. Moisture: Keep soil lightly moist but never wet. Overwatering is the main cause of failure. Mist gently when the surface begins to dry.
  5. Germination Time: Seeds typically germinate in 2-4 weeks, though some may take up to 6 weeks. Be patient and maintain consistent conditions.
  6. Transplanting: Once seedlings have 2-3 true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle, transplant carefully to individual pots with very well-draining mix.
  7. Growing On: Grow seedlings in bright light with excellent air circulation. Water sparingly—allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Planting Tips: Plant in full sun in very well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil. Ideal for USDA zones 5-9. Avoid heavy, wet soils. Once established, Golden Drop is extremely drought-tolerant and requires minimal care. May bloom in the second year from seed.
