Imperator 58 Carrot Seeds – Heirloom AAS Winner

The Imperator 58 Carrot is a classic American heirloom variety introduced in 1935 and an All-America Selections (AAS) Winner — one of the most iconic long-root carrots ever developed. Growing 9–9.5 inches long and tapering to a fine point, Imperator 58 produces deep orange, thin-skinned roots with a sweet, crisp flavor that made it the standard for commercial carrot production for decades. With tall, vigorous tops and impressive root length, it’s a standout in any home garden or market garden.

Ready to harvest in just 75 days, Imperator 58 is best planted in early spring in deep, loose soil. Its long, straight roots and excellent raw flavor make it perfect for fresh eating, salads, juicing, and cooking.

  • Root Size: 9–9.5 inches long × 1.5 inches wide
  • Color: Deep orange

  • Days to Maturity: 75 days
  • Seed Count: Approx. 20,000–25,000 seeds per oz.

  • Best For: Fresh eating, salads, juicing, soups, roasting

Soil Preparation

  • Spade or till soil to a depth of at least 12 inches — Imperator’s long roots require deep, loose, stone-free soil.
  • Rake out clods, rocks, and weeds to create a fine seedbed for smooth, straight roots.
  • Incorporate 2–4 inches of compost or rotted manure into the top 6–8 inches of soil.
  • Add a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) at 2–4 cups per 100 sq ft at planting.

Planting Instructions

  • Make shallow rows 12–18 inches apart.
  • Sow seeds at 2–3 seeds per inch; cover lightly with ¼ to ½ inch of soil.
  • Thin seedlings to 2 inches apart when tops reach 2 inches tall — keep the strongest seedlings.
  • Mulch with 1–3 inches of straw or shredded bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Watering & Fertilizing

  • Water lightly and consistently to keep soil uniformly moist — avoid soggy soil, which causes forked or hairy roots.
  • Use a drip irrigation system or soaker hose to keep foliage dry.
  • Apply a nitrogen fertilizer (e.g., 21-0-0) at ¼ cup per 10 feet of row, 6 weeks after seedlings emerge.
  • Hoe regularly to control weeds, which compete for water and nutrients.

Harvest Tips

  • Harvest when shoulder diameter reaches approximately 1½ inches.
  • Do not allow roots to fully over-mature — Imperator varieties can become woody and lose sweetness if left too long.
  • Roots store well in cool, moist conditions for weeks after harvest.
