Black Beluga Lentil Seeds

Grow this striking black lentil variety for home use or sprout it in a jar, tray or sprouting bag. The dark, rounded lentils hold their shape when cooked and make a distinctive addition to salads and other savory dishes.

Growing information

  • Botanical name: Lens culinaris
  • Cool-season annual; sow in spring
  • About 80–110 days to maturity
  • Approximately 600 seeds per ounce

Plant in a sunny spot with loose, well-drained soil. Lentils grow through the cooler season and finish as summer heat arrives. Harvest pods when they rattle, before they split open. Cut or pull the plants and dry them on a tarp for about a week, then thresh and winnow the lentils.

Sprouting

Presoak seeds for 4–6 hours, then drain. Use a clean jar, tray or sprouting bag, and rinse and drain regularly. Sprouting time varies with conditions, so check the seeds as they germinate.

In the kitchen

Cook black lentils in salads and other savory meals. Their dark color and firm texture make them a distinctive pantry staple.
