Monkshood: 10 Seeds

Bigelowia nuttallii — Rayless Goldenrod or Jimmyweed — is a native North American sub-shrub perennial native to the southern United States, where it grows on sandstone and the edges of pine forests. Forms attractive, upright clumps up to 70 cm (28 inches) tall with very narrow, lanceolate, green foliage. Dense, flat-topped yellow umbels create an unusual, planar visual impression in late summer and fall. Drought-tolerant, undemanding, and persistent as a flowering groundcover. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–10. Flowers in year two from seed.

Plant Highlights

  • Native to the southern United States — sandstone soils and pine forest edges
  • Drought-tolerant; easy to care for and undemanding once established
  • Persistent flowering groundcover with upright, very stable stems
  • Evergreen / wintergreen habit; very narrow lanceolate green foliage
  • Blooms August–October; flowers in the second year from seed
  • Hardy in USDA Zones 4–10

Sowing Guide

Germination: Rapid germinating. Sow on or just below the soil surface — very small seeds should be pressed firmly into the earth rather than buried. Keep seeds in constant moisture (not wet) at approximately +20°C [68°F]. Do not place in direct sunlight during germination. After germination, move to cooler conditions to encourage strong establishment.
