Coreopsis lanceolata โ€” Lance-Leaf Coreopsis, also called Sand Coreopsis or Tickseed โ€” is a tough, drought-tolerant native perennial that waves bright yellow, daisy-like blooms in late spring and early summer on sunny, hot, dry, or poor-soil sites where other perennials struggle. Flowers measure approximately 1ยฝ inches in diameter and bloom singly on long stems โ€” outstanding for cutting, pollinator gardens, prairie plantings, and wildflower mixes. Beloved by native bees, honey bees, and other pollinators. Hardy in USDA Zones 4โ€“9; native across much of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Deer resistant. ~151,625 seeds per oz.

Plant Highlights

  • Bright yellow, 1ยฝ-inch daisy-like blooms on long stems โ€” late spring to early summer
  • Outstanding drought tolerance once established; thrives in dry, sandy, or poor soil
  • Attracts native bees, honey bees, and a wide range of pollinators
  • Deer resistant; native to much of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada
  • Excellent cut flower; suitable for wildflower mixes, roadsides, and prairie plantings
  • May self-seed when seeds make direct contact with soil

Growing Guide

Starting: Sow seeds in spring (or fall in most U.S. states for natural stratification). Start indoors or direct sow outdoors โ€” transplants well. Do not cover seeds; press them firmly into the soil surface. Light is required for germination.

Germination: 14โ€“28 days at 65ยฐF. Keep seeds moist until germination. Sow 3โ€“4 seeds per plant location; thin to 18 inches apart.

First year: Plants develop strongly in year one and may produce a few blooms. Full flowering begins in year two.

Maintenance: Deadhead spent blossoms promptly to prolong the bloom season and encourage continuous flowering. May need staking at full height. Allow some seed heads to remain if self-seeding is desired.
