Planting and care
Direct sow after frost danger has passed and the soil is warmer than 65°F. Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing if desired. Plant about 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart near a sturdy trellis, fence, or arbor. You can also start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost in individual pots, taking care not to disturb the roots when transplanting. Water young plants regularly, then keep established vines watered during dry spells.
Ways to use it in the garden
Train the vines over an arbor, create a seasonal screen along a fence, or grow them against a backdrop where the flowers and purple pods can stand out. Leave spent flowers in place if you want the ornamental pods to develop.
Important safety note
Grow this variety primarily as an ornamental. Mature hyacinth bean seeds and pods can be toxic if eaten without proper preparation. Do not eat raw mature seeds or pods, and do not assume this ornamental seed listing is intended for food use.
