Planting Guide (Garden Beds)

Location: Full sun to bright filtered light; well-drained soil essential. If puddles persist 5–6 hours after rain, amend with compost, peat moss, or bark to improve drainage. Callas thrive in average to moist soil but will not survive in soggy ground.

Planting: Plant shallowly — tops of tubers exposed or just at the soil surface. Locate the side with the most “eyes” (growing points, similar to potato eyes) and plant eyes-up. Water generously after planting to settle the soil. Roots and sprouts form within a few weeks; if soil is still cool, wait or start indoors first.

Watering: Keep soil slightly damp — never soggy. Water regularly during active growth.

In bloom: Cut flowers freely for bouquets — it does not harm the plant. Calla blooms are long-lasting and prized by florists.

Post-Bloom & Winter Care

After blooming, leave foliage in place until it yellows naturally — the leaves feed the bulb for next year’s display. Remove yellowed leaves. In cold areas, dig tubers after the first frost, air dry for several days, then store in a cool location in paper bags or peat moss until spring. Callas rest for a few months before beginning the next growing cycle.

Container Planting

Use well-draining potting mix with adequate drainage holes — tubers must never sit in waterlogged soil. Plant eyes-up, just below the soil surface. Water generously after planting; keep soil slightly damp throughout the growing season. Mix freely with other container plants that share the same light and water needs. Post-bloom care is identical to garden bed culture.
