Flower and Growing Details

  • Flower form: Double, with densely layered petals.
  • Color: Deep red to deep pink with green markings on the outer petals.
  • Bloom season: Spring, typically April–May depending on climate and weather.
  • Height: Approximately 50 cm (20 inches).
  • Light: Full sun to light shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained; avoid sites that remain waterlogged.

Fall Planting

Prepare a site with good drainage, incorporating compost where needed to improve soil structure. Plant bulbs with the pointed end facing upward, positioning the base approximately 6–7 inches below the soil surface. Space bulbs about 5 inches apart in garden beds.

Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. Roots develop in fall, followed by foliage and flowers in spring. Tulips need a winter cooling period; warm-climate gardeners should plan for appropriate chilling rather than expect reliable flowering without it.

Growing in Containers

Use a container with drainage holes and well-drained potting mix. Space bulbs approximately 4 inches apart, allowing sufficient container depth for planting and root growth. Place in full sun to light shade and avoid standing water.

After-Flowering Care

Leave foliage in place after flowering so the leaves can replenish the bulb. Water as needed during active growth without saturating the soil. Remove leaves only after they turn yellow and die back, and avoid unnecessary watering during summer dormancy. Repeat flowering varies with climate and growing conditions.

Important Safety Note

For ornamental use only. Despite the dessert-inspired name, these tulips are not edible. Keep bulbs and plant material away from children and pets; do not ingest.
