Jamaican apple, netted custard apple, sugar apple

The Sugar Apple is a deciduous tree that grows up to 25 feet in height in warm, frost-free areas of Florida. It is native to Central America and loses its leaves for about four to six weeks after Christmas. The fruit ripens from mid-summer to late fall.

To grow a healthy sugar apple tree, fertilize every 3-4 months with a citrus or palm fertilizer containing micro-nutrients. In zones 9-11, it can be grown outdoors, or in a pot in zones 4-11.

  • Prepare for planting: Begin by soaking the seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours or gently nicking the seed coat if needed.
  • Then, mix equal parts potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite to create a suitable soil mixture.
  • Plant the seeds: Place the seeds in a shallow, 2-3 centimeter deep hole with the opening facing up.
  • Keep the soil moist: Regularly mist the tray to keep the soil moist without oversaturating it.
  • Rotate the tray: Remember to rotate the tray every few days to ensure proper sunlight exposure.
  •  Patience is key: Germination can take several weeks to a couple of months, so be patient.
  • Gradually adjust: As the seedlings grow, gradually introduce them to less humid conditions.
