Motherwort, it is both medicinal and ornamental. Seaweed like leaves around purple/pink flowers with dark green/black frilly calyxes. Very long holding, both on the plant and once cut.
Used as cardiac tonic and to calm nerves because of its relaxing effect on smooth muscles, eases stomach gas and menstrual pain. Tea is bitter, better consumed as tincture. Used by midwives to prevent uterine infection, hence the name Motherwort, other related uses have contradictory recommendations and possibly should be avoided during pregnancy. Flowers are attractive to bees and can be used to flavor lentil or pea soups. Also known as Lionâs Ear, Lionâs Tail, or Cow Wort.
Originated in Eurasia, has spread worldwide due to use as an herbal remedy.
How to grow motherwort from seed, division
Direct seed in the fall or start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost, transplant out after frost or direct seed after last frost. Easy to grow once started, will self-seed in disturbed areas and spread around your garden. Stem gets prickly in the fall. Soil pH 6.5-8. Hardiness zones 4-9.
