Scilla Peruviana, also known as the Portuguese Squill or Peruvian Lily, is an evergreen perennial native to Portugal and Spain. Beyond being an easy-going addition to the late spring and early summer garden, this charmer is an outstanding source of coveted blue color.

Plant Scilla Peruviana in beds, borders, or containers, and as you relish in the early season blooms, you can rest assured that you'll have increasingly large clumps as the bulbs multiply year after year. Slender, lance-shaped foliage frames the towering flower stalks, giving this showstopper all of that star quality it deserves without the prima donna disposition.

Caribbean or Cuban Lily, Giant Squill, Hyacinth of Peru. Native to Portugal and Spain in the 17th century, this tender variety has a long-lasting, 6", globe-shaped flower composed of over 100 compact, lavender-blue florets with thick, strappy, 12" foliage. At the flowers crown, the florets are much more tightly compacted, giving the appearance of a little top cap. A Mediterranean climate lover, it prefers not-too-rich and very well-draining soil. Plant this tender bulb shallow with its neck just at soil level, 12" apart in HZ: 8-10. A low rosette of foliage may appear in the fall. Not frost hardy, it may be grown as a potted plant elsewhere. Store the bulb dry and cool (50 F to 60 F) and pot it in a cozy pot (1-2 in circumference larger than the bulb) in early January or when the bulb begins to sprout top growth. Once the threat of spring frost has passed, the pot of Scilla peruviana may be brought outside to be returned inside once fall frosts.
How to Grow Scilla Bulbs:

1. In the Fall, choose a spot that gets quite a lot of light and has good soil drainage.

2. Planting scilla bulbs is fairly simple. You'll notice when you receive your bulbs that they look like mini onions and it will be easy to see that the spike should point upwards when planting.

3. Usually the rule of thumb when planting bulbs is that bulbs need at least 2 times their height of soil above them. Dig a 2 to 3 inch deep hole, drop the bulb into it (remember, spike points up!) and cover with soil.

4. Regarding spacing between bulbs, if planting in beds, leave approx 4 inches between each bulb. If you are planting in containers, you can cluster them a little closer together.

5. After planting, water well so that the soil above the bulbs settles.

6. Scilla bulbs will flower in the Spring. After the flowers die down, the plant can enjoy a warm rest period. You don't have to water too much during this rest period. Leaves will also die back and start to yellow. At this point, you can choose to tidy up the plant and remove the old leaves.

Scilla flowers are absolutely charming mixed into a bouquet or in a low vase. It will not hurt the plant to cut the flower, so don't hesitate if you prefer to enjoy the blooms in a vase.
