Garden Soy may be eaten directly like other beans or peas. They are exceptionally nutritious and tasty, cold or hot, for snacks or meals, even if you don't like tofu. Easy to grow and easy to prepare, Garden Soy was developed for the home garden and human diet by Dr. Richard Bernard, University of Illinois, Urbana. Delicious, edible garden soybeans are here to stay.
This early maturing, non-GMO, open pollinated soybean, or edamame, is a popular Japanese variety that yields a prolific quantity of pods containing 3 to 4 beans each. The pod has white pubescence. Most of the pods mature at the same time for ease of harvest. The bushy plants need warm day and cool night temperatures for good results.
Direct sow outside after danger of last frost. Plant about 4” apart and 1“ below soil surface. Rows should be spaced at 24”-30” apart.
How to Grow Soybeans
Growing soybeans has become increasingly popular with home gardeners. These warm weather plants are grown in Africa, Asia, and Australia. They have gained popularity in western countries due to their health benefits. They are high in fiber and protein, and are a good source of calcium.Unlike other types of beans, soybeans do not grow very high and usually do not need staking or support. This makes them easy to grow in containers if you do not have much space in your yard. The plant is pretty enough to serve as an ornamental, plus you have the added benefit of growing protein-packed beans. You can grow soybeans that you eat fresh, such as edamame, or you can grow beans that you will allow to dry.
