Leucojum vernum — Spring Snowflake — is one of the most beautiful and rarely encountered native wildflowers, now known in only a handful of wild localities in the British Isles. In early spring it produces fragrant white flowers with six equal, delicate green-tipped petals that are among the most welcome of all early-season blooms. A true collector’s bulb for the patient gardener — plants are grown from seed and take 2–3 years to flower, but reward with an elegant, naturalizing perennial that returns year after year. 10 seeds per pack (seeds, not bulbs).

Plant Highlights

  • Fragrant white flowers with 6 equal green-tipped petals — among the most welcome of early spring blooms
  • Rare native wildflower — a collector’s choice for the patient, dedicated grower
  • Naturalizing perennial bulb — takes 2–3 years from seed to flower, then returns reliably
  • Prefers moist, humus-rich soil in full sun
  • 10 seeds per pack (seeds, not bulbs)

Sowing & Germination Guide

Spring Snowflake requires a two-stage temperature stratification process for germination. Follow carefully:

  1. Sow indoors any time of year, or under glass / in a cold frame in autumn. Sow thinly into moist, well-drained seed compost.
  2. Warm phase: Maintain at 18–22°C (64–72°F) for 2–4 weeks.
  3. Cold stratification: Move to −4°C to +4°C (24–39°F) for 4–6 weeks.
  4. Germination phase: Return to 5–12°C (41–54°F). Germination occurs within 2–4 weeks from this point.
  5. Cold frame alternative: If sown in a cold frame in autumn, 2–3 months of natural winter cold provides ideal stratification; germination occurs the following spring as temperatures warm.

Growing On

Allow seedlings to grow undisturbed for 1 full year. Pot up the small bulbs when dormant, allowing 2–3 bulbs per pot. Grow on for a further 2 years before planting out during the dormant period. Do not cut back leaves until they have completely died down. Propagate via seed, or divide offsets in September–October.

Care Guide

Soil: Moderately fertile, humus-rich, reliably moist. Good drainage still required — avoid waterlogging.

Light: Full sun preferred.

Maintenance: Minimal once established. Do not cut foliage until fully died back. Divide offsets in September–October to increase stock.
