Lobularia maritima 'Royal Carpet' is a fragrant, low-growing carpet of pink flowers that reaches just 2–4 inches tall and spreads up to 12 inches wide. A native of southern Europe that has naturalized across the United States, Sweet Alyssum thrives in almost any well-drained soil and grows rapidly from seed into a continuous display of honey-scented blooms. It performs beautifully as a border edging, pathway planting, or low-traffic groundcover — and it attracts beneficial insects including hoverflies, parasitic wasps, and pollinators that help control garden pests. Drought tolerant, heat tolerant, and deer resistant.

Plant Highlights

  • Fragrant masses of pink flowers; blooms continuously throughout the growing season
  • Compact and low-growing: 2–4 inches tall, spreading up to 12 inches
  • Attracts beneficial insects and pollinators
  • Drought and heat tolerant once established
  • Excellent for borders, path edges, and low-traffic groundcover
  • Deer resistant; self-sows readily

Growing Guide

Direct sowing: Sow in early spring after the last killing frost. Do not cover seeds — press lightly onto the soil surface; seeds need light to germinate. Keep moist until germination (15–20 days at 55–75°F).

Site & soil: Full sun to partial shade; well-drained soil, pH 6.0–6.5. Adapts to poor, sandy, and rocky soils. Tolerates dry conditions once established.

Ongoing care: Deadhead or shear plants after the first flush of blooms to encourage continued flowering. In mild-winter areas, plants may overwinter and bloom nearly year-round.
