Grow one heirloom bean for two kinds of harvest. Black Valentine produces crisp green pods to pick young as snap beans, then glossy black seeds when pods are left to mature and dry. Its compact bush habit and prolific yields make it a practical choice for a sunny vegetable garden.

Planting and care
Direct sow after the last chance of spring frost in full sun and well-drained soil. Plant about 1 inch deep, spacing seeds 4–6 inches apart, with rows about 2–3 feet apart. Keep the soil moist without waterlogging it, and water at the base when possible. For successive snap-bean harvests, sow another planting every 7–14 days while the season allows.
Harvest your way
Pick green pods regularly while young for fresh snap beans; frequent picking encourages more harvests. For dry beans, let the pods dry on the plants, then shell and finish drying the black seeds before storing them in a cool, dry place. From a crisp garden-picked side dish to a pot of homegrown dry beans, this variety earns its space twice over.
