Popcorn is currently one of America's favorite snack foods. However, it has been cultivated for several thousand years. Popcorn is one of the oldest types of corn with some types dating back to 3600 BC.
Popcorn is grown for its tasty, exploding seed. Heating the kernel converts the moisture inside the kernel to steam and turns the seed inside out. The quality of the end product depends on the conditions during growing, harvest, and storage.

Corn - Tom Thumb Popcorn - Zea mays
This old open pollinated variety is also sometimes called Tom Thumb. If you like small, hulless, tender popcorn, you definitely will want to try this one!
Tender Annual Heirloom. Tom Thumb is an extra early, open-pollinated popcorn which succeeds even in cold climates. The dwarf, 3'-tall plants with ears 3"-4" long are a fun crop for children to grow.

Soil & Water: Corn is a heavy feeder requiring high amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK). Its weak and shallow root system likes loose soil with a high compost content.

Planting & Growing: Sow seeds directly outdoors 1 week after the last frost. You can start earlier by using black or green plastic mulches and floating row covers to obtain optimum conditions. Plant in blocks rather than rows to ensure good germination. To prevent cross-pollination, plant different varieties at least 500'.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest the ears when husks have dried and kernels are plump, well-colored, and shiny. Husk and dry cobs in a cool, well-ventilated space. After one month, test-pop a few kernels every few days until successful. Remove kernels from cobs and store in dark containers.

Did You Know? Tom Thumb's small ears make charming table ornaments when dried, and its small height will not shade other plants in your garden!
