Crinum x powellii — Swamp Lily, also known as Cape Lily — is a magnificent, fragrant bulbous perennial producing clusters of 8–10 trumpet-shaped, light pink blossoms, each up to 5 inches wide, on tall stems from late summer through fall. Flowers emerge in succession against a lush backdrop of bright green, strap-shaped leaves. Hardy perennial in the southern U.S.; excellent container plant in colder climates where it can be lifted and overwintered. Deer resistant. Rarely troubled by pests.

Plant Highlights

  • Clusters of 8–10 fragrant, trumpet-shaped light pink blooms — each up to 5 inches wide
  • Blooms in succession from late summer through fall; long-lasting display
  • Bright green strap-shaped foliage; clump-forming and impressive at scale
  • Outstanding container plant — easy to lift and overwinter in colder climates
  • Deer resistant; rarely bothered by pests

Planting & Care Guide

Planting: Plant bulbs 8–12 inches deep and space 6 inches apart in well-drained, fertile soil. Choose a full sun to afternoon sun location.

Water: Water moderately during active growth; sparingly during the rest period. Good drainage is essential — do not allow bulbs to sit in waterlogged soil.

Transplanting: Crinum dislikes being disturbed — avoid transplanting unless necessary. Mulch well over winter in colder zones to protect the root zone.

Container growing: Plant in a large container with excellent drainage. In zones below 7–8, lift the container and bring it indoors before the first hard frost. Store in a cool, bright location with minimal watering.
