Deschampsia cespitosa, also known as Tufted Hairgrass, is a highly ornamental, cool-season grass. Its fine foliage forms dense tufts up to 3 feet tall, providing a beautiful cloud-like appearance. This grass maintains its green color in spring and turns gold in fall, remaining attractive throughout winter. It is great for stabilizing disturbed areas and can be mixed with other plants for a beautiful shade garden.
It can be easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in partial shade. Prefers moist, organically rich soils. For best Spring appearance, cut old foliage to the ground in late winter before new shoots appear. Tufted hairgrass is one of the few ornamental grasses that grows well in moderately shady locations; however, it will not flower well if moved into too much shade. Grows best in USDA Zones 4 - 9 as a perennial.
