Get a head start on homegrown greens with a bundle of 10 green kale starter plants. These pre-started plants let you begin with young vegetable starts rather than sowing seeds. Settle them into a garden bed or roomy containers, then enjoy picking leaves for soups, sautés, and other kitchen favorites as your plants establish.

What you receive

Each bundle contains 10 live green kale starter plants. This listing is for young plants, not seeds or harvested kale. Plants need transplanting and continued care before harvest. Size and appearance may vary with growth stage and season.

Arrival care

  • Unpack promptly and inspect the plants and growing medium.
  • Water gently if the root area feels dry, allowing excess water to drain.
  • Place in bright, sheltered light while plants recover from transit.
  • Gradually acclimate plants to outdoor sun and wind before transplanting.

When and where to plant

Kale is commonly grown during the cooler parts of the gardening season. Choose planting dates suited to your local weather, avoiding severe cold or intense heat while young plants establish.

Select a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. In hot conditions, some afternoon shade may help. Work compost into the planting area before transplanting. Containers should have drainage holes and sufficient room for roots to develop.

Transplanting guide

  1. Moisten the root area before transplanting.
  2. Handle each plant gently, keeping the roots and surrounding growing medium together as much as possible.
  3. Plant at approximately its previous growing depth, allowing around 12–18 inches between plants; mature spacing needs can vary by variety.
  4. Firm the soil gently and water thoroughly.
  5. Monitor moisture closely during the first days after planting.

Growing care

Keep soil evenly moist without waterlogging. A light mulch can help conserve moisture and suppress weeds; leave space around the stems. Feed according to the directions on a fertilizer suitable for leafy vegetables.

Inspect regularly for caterpillars, aphids, and other common brassica pests. Insect netting or row cover may help protect young plants where appropriate; check the plants and temperatures underneath regularly.

Harvesting and kitchen use

Let plants establish and produce healthy new growth before harvesting. Pick outer leaves selectively, keeping the central growing point intact and leaving enough foliage for continued growth. Harvest timing and yield depend on variety, weather, and care rather than a guaranteed date.

Wash leaves thoroughly before preparing. Remove tough stems as needed, then sauté, simmer in soups, or add to other cooked dishes. Refrigerate harvested leaves promptly if not using them straight away.
