Pixie Delight is the lupine for gardens where full-sized varieties just won't fit. At a compact 12–18 inches tall — compared to the 36–48 inches of standard Russell types — this dwarf mix packs the classic lupine charm into a much more manageable plant. Loose 8-inch flower spikes in an appealing mix of pink, blue, purple, and white — some bicolored or marked for added variety — bloom through the summer, making Pixie Delight an ideal choice for containers, rock gardens, front-of-border plantings, and small garden beds where vertical interest is welcome without overwhelming the space.
Plant Highlights
- Compact 12–18 inch habit — ideal where standard lupines are too tall
- Mixed flower colors: pink, blue, purple, white; some bicolored and marked
- Excellent in containers, rock gardens, and small border plantings
- Deer resistant; attracts pollinators
- Self-sows if flowers are left to set seed
Growing Guide
Seed prep: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to improve germination rates.
Starting indoors: Sow in peaty starter trays 6–8 weeks before last frost. Use individual pulp pots to avoid root disturbance at transplant time — lupines strongly dislike having roots disturbed. Barely cover seeds; press into the soil surface. Keep moist at 68°F; germination in 7–14 days. Transplant at 4 inches tall once frost danger has passed.
Direct sowing (recommended): Sow 1–2 weeks after the last frost in prepared, well-drained soil. Plant 3–4 seeds together, 18–24 inches apart; thin to the strongest plant at 2 inches tall.
Watering: Water well the first season (1 inch/week). Established plants need supplemental irrigation only during prolonged heat or drought.
