(Agastache mexicana)

A perennial plant packed with greenish-grey foliage and spiky purple, pink, blue or yellow blooms, nectar-rich Mexican hyssop (Agastache mexicana) attracts hummingbirds, honeybees and butterflies to the garden from late summer until the first frost. Native to Mexico and the southwestern United States, Mexican hyssop is a good choice for a natural, low-maintenance, wildflower garden. A sturdy plant that prefers bright sunlight, Mexican hyssop is perennial in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 6 through 9.

Plant Mexican hyssop in well-drained soil and full sunlight. Although the plant adapts to a range of soil conditions, it performs best in poor, slightly acidic or neutral soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. If the soil is compacted, add 3 to 4 inches of compost or peat moss. Allow 18 to 24 inches between each plant.

Water the plants deeply once or twice every week during the first year, providing enough water to soak the soil to a depth of about 6 inches. Mexican hyssop is drought tolerant once the roots are established. After the first year, water the plant only when the soil is dry or the plant appears wilted.
