Tokyo Long White Bunching Onion (Allium fistulosum) is a cold-hardy heirloom variety perfect for continuous harvests of sweet, crisp scallions. Fast-growing, disease-resistant, and ideal for gardens, containers, or raised beds.
Key Features:
- 60-90 days to maturity
- Non-GMO, open-pollinated heirloom
- Cold tolerant and disease resistant (PR, thrips, smut)
- Slender 16-18" stalks with mild, sweet flavor
- Harvest as tender scallions or mature green onions
Seed Count:
- 1 oz ≈ 8,400 seeds
- 1/4 lb ≈ 33,600 seeds
Planting Guide:
When to Sow: 4-6 weeks before last frost, or successive sowings every 2-4 weeks for continuous production. In mild climates, sow in fall for spring harvest.
How to Plant: Scatter seeds tightly in garden beds or sow 10 per hole in 1" of well-drained, loamy soil in full sun. Can be started indoors 5-6 weeks before transplanting. Thrives in various soil types and small spaces.
Care: Keep well-watered and weed-free. Bunching onions have slender roots and begin forming scallions within weeks.
Harvest: Begin after 60 days. Longer growth produces stronger flavor. With cold protection, plants overwinter for spring harvest. Best used fresh—not for long-term storage.
Uses: Slice into salads, serve whole on vegetable platters, or add to soups, stews, and stir-fries. Sweet onions and juicy, bluish-green tops enhance any dish.
