Poinsettias are a favorite for holiday home decor, featuring dark green leaves and vibrant red 'bracts' surrounding green-yellow flowers in December and January. These beautiful plants, native to Mexico, can be challenging to maintain after Christmas and are often discarded once the red bracts fade. But with proper care, you can enjoy your poinsettia all year long and even promote the growth of new bracts and flowers for the next holiday season.

Poinsettias, scientifically known as Euphorbia pulcherrima, are a popular holiday houseplant with dark green foliage and vibrant red 'bracts' that frame the green-yellow flowers in December and January. Originating in Mexico, these plants can be challenging to maintain beyond the holiday season, often being discarded once the red bracts have lost their color and the celebrations have passed. Nevertheless, with proper care and attention, it is possible to keep your poinsettia alive year-round and even stimulate the development of new red bracts and flowers for the next Christmas season.

How to grow poinsettia

To maximize the growth of your poinsettia, ensure it is placed in a draft-free area with bright, indirect light and maintained at a temperature of approximately 13-15°C. It is important to water sparingly, only when the compost's surface begins to dry out. To maintain humidity and prolong the vibrant color of the bracts, regularly mist the leaves and bracts. After the holiday season, consider feeding your poinsettia with a high-potash liquid feed, such as a tomato feed, once a month.
