AMARYLLIS DENVER
'Christmas Gift' Amaryllis produces huge, snow white flowers with delicate, pale green throats. Strong-stemmed and reliable, this amaryllis blooms 6-12 weeks after planting. As the name implies, these cheerful wintertime flowers make a lovely holiday gift for all.
Many amaryllis (Hippeastrum spp.) bulbs are sold and bought around the holidays thanks to their ability to be grown indoors in the winter. Forcing the bulb produces a vibrant blossom that makes a beautiful and meaningful gift. The "Apple Blossom" amaryllis produces a white flower streaked with a pink blush, perfect for occasions like Valentine's Day.

Forcing Blooms
Plant your "Apple Blossom" amaryllis bulb in well-draining planting medium formulated for containers. The bulb should be planted so that the top 1/3 protrudes from the surface of the soil. Water it thoroughly after planting, giving it enough so that drained water appears in the tray beneath the pot. Allow the soil to dry somewhat before watering again. Establish a regular schedule, watering the bulb once per week. The soil should stay moist but not drenched, and should not be allowed to dry out completely.
During Growth and Flowering
Once the bulb begins to grow, place the plant in a bright window. The watering schedule remains the same. Fertilize the bulb with a water-soluble fertilizer formulated for container growth. Repeat applications of fertilizer every two to four weeks, and water thoroughly after every application of fertilizer. Continue this regimen until the bulb flowers and dies.
After Flowering
The "Apple Blossom" will need to rebuild reserves after the blossom fades. Cut the blossom from the bulb using sharp pruning shears, and leave a 1- or 2-inch stalk protruding from the bulb. Cut back your watering schedule to allow the planting medium to dry more between waterings. Watering every 10 days should be sufficient. Continue to fertilize once or twice per month, and water after fertilizing.
Reflowering
In late summer, cut back your watering habit, stop fertilizing and put the container with the bulb inside the house in a semidark space no warmer than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This will cause the bulb to go dormant. Water every two weeks and cut off the brown and shriveled foliage. Keep this up for at least two months, then repot in fresh growing medium. Place the bulb in a bright window and begin watering as you did when you first induced flowering -- once per week.
