Cheiro Roxa Pepper Seeds

Add distinctive purple color and aromatic flavor to your pepper garden with Cheiro Roxa, a Brazilian Capsicum chinense seasoning pepper. Compact, rounded pods and purplish-green foliage make it an attractive choice for garden beds and sunny patio containers, with fruit to use in savory dishes and homemade condiments.

Variety details

  • Brazilian seasoning pepper with a floral, aromatic flavor
  • Botanical name: Capsicum chinense
  • Listed plant height: approximately 24–30 inches
  • Pods develop from deep purple to pinkish-purple as they mature
  • Approximate pod size: ½–¾ inch long and ¾–1 inch wide
  • Listed maturity: approximately 80–90 days; timing varies with growing conditions

Heat note: A verified heat rating is not provided for this seed lot. Do not assume the fruit is heat-free; test a small amount before adding it to a dish.

Starting from seed

Start indoors 8–10 weeks before your expected last frost. Sow approximately ¼ inch deep in a clean seed-starting mix. Maintain consistent warmth around 80–85°F and keep the mix evenly moist without waterlogging. Germination may take 1–4 weeks, and some seeds may take longer.

Provide bright light after emergence. Gradually harden seedlings off before transplanting outdoors after frost danger has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above 55°F.

Growing and care

Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. For containers, use a pot of approximately 5 gallons with drainage holes. Water consistently during dry periods and mulch around plants, keeping mulch away from the stems.

Feed according to the directions on a fertilizer suitable for peppers. Avoid excessive fertilizer and prolonged wet soil. Container plants may need more frequent moisture checks than plants in garden beds.

Harvesting

Use garden scissors to cut mature pods from the plant rather than pulling on the branches. Look for the variety's pinkish-purple mature color and harvest regularly as fruit ripens. Wear gloves when handling or cutting peppers if you are sensitive to heat, and avoid touching your eyes.

Culinary uses

Use small amounts to add aromatic flavor to rice, beans, meat dishes, sofrito, salsas and pepper pastes. Pair with lime, cilantro or coconut in savory recipes. The compact pods can also be pickled using a tested food-preservation recipe.
