Tropaeolum majus ‘Tom Thumb Mixed’ is a compact, dwarf nasturtium producing a cheerful blend of single, edible flowers in gold, orange, red, and yellow — all with the characteristic tangy, peppery flavor nasturtiums are beloved for. Perfect for salads, edible garnishes, and stuffing; every part of the plant is edible — flowers, leaves, buds, pods, seeds, and roots. Native to the subtropical Andes; excellent companion plant for the vegetable garden. Attracts bees; suitable for containers and borders. 220 seeds per oz.

Plant Highlights

  • Dwarf, compact habit with single edible blooms in gold, orange, red, and yellow
  • Tangy, peppery flavor — entire plant is edible; ideal for salads, garnishes, and stir-frys
  • Excellent companion plant — peppery foliage deters many garden pests
  • Attracts bees; works well in containers, borders, and vegetable garden edges
  • May self-seed; low-maintenance once established
  • 220 seeds per oz

Sowing Guide

Starting indoors: Sow 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Plant 3–4 seeds, ⅛ inch deep, in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Germination: 14–21 days. Move seedlings to a grow light (16 hours/day) until true leaves develop. Harden off before transplanting outdoors.

Outdoor spacing: 18–24 inches apart. Full sun preferred in cooler climates; afternoon shade beneficial in the hottest regions.

Care Guide

Watering: Water regularly for seedlings until established. Mature plants prefer occasional deep watering; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. Tolerates poor or sandy soil and some drought once established.

Fertilizing: Do not fertilize — excess nutrients produce excessive foliage at the expense of blooms.

Maintenance: Deadhead spent flowers to extend the blooming period. Plants may self-seed for natural return the following season.

Harvest & Culinary Use

All parts of the plant are edible — flowers, leaves, buds, seeds, pods, and roots. Young leaves make excellent fresh greens; blossoms are a colorful edible garnish. Note: lifespan as cut flowers is short — best enjoyed fresh or eaten.
