Paeonia Lactiflora ‘Shirley Temple’ often known as just Peony, is a clump forming, herbaceous perennial which is known for its pure beauty, which has divided, dark green leaves. In June and July Paeonia Lactiflora ‘Shirley Temple’ will bloom these pure white, highly fragrant double flowers, often slightly rose pink when young turning into fully white with age.
With such beauty few gardeners can resist the Peony, making a perfect specimen plant that is sure to be the main focus of the planting scheme. Often planted in flower beds and borders, underplanting, and many garden types such as informal gardens, cottage gardens and more.
Paeonia Lactiflora ‘Shirley Temple’ care
Plant the Paeonia Lactiflora ‘Shirley Temple’ in a sunny, partially shaded, sheltered area of the garden with moist, well drained, fertile soils where it will thrive. Generally doesn’t require masses of care however some care will help this Peony grow into the beauty it is. In spring a good layer of mulch will help the plant. Pruning the flowers once they begin to fade and then in autumn pruning the plant once the foliage begins to die back.
When planting, water deeply and maintain even soil moisture until the ground freezes to help the plant develop as many feeder roots as possible its first fall. To protect the delicate roots the first winter, apply mulch. After the ground freezes, mound the newly planted area with 2-4 inches of soil or 5-8 inches of a fluffy, non-matting mulch such as straw, cornstalks, peat moss, or evergreen boughs – but not leaves.
Tip: Potted dormant perennials can be kept in a well-lit cool/cold area (i.e. garage, shed, even in a protected area outdoors) until ready for spring planting. Do not allow them to completely dry out.
