This leaf green is traditionally used in Portuguese sopas or sopash which is a stew with meat, vegetables, and spices. Use leaves as you would collards and mustards. Excellent juiced. Portuguese kale is known as a couve trochuda, Portuguese cabbage, and Sea kale. The green leaves are wide and large with thick midribs and stems growing up to 2 feet.
Cool season annual
Portuguese Kale (Couve tronchuda) is the sweetest and most tender of all our kale varieties. The leaves look like large collard leaves but with many white veins. They are delicious finely sliced and briefly cooked. Raw foodies also love this variety because of its tenderness. The plants are heat and cold tolerant and very productive. Appro 7000 seeds per oz
Maturity: Approx. 75-85 days
Planting season: Spring/late, summer-early fall
Cultivation: Prefers full sun in spring and fall, but can benefit from light shade during hot weather. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. For spring crops, start plants indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, and transplant after danger of all frost. For fall crops, direct sow 2-3 months before first frost. Keep soil moist. When plants reach 12" tall, start harvesting the outer leaves, leaving 3 inner layers to support further growth or harvest entire mature plant.
