Rice Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are related to the Kidney Bean. They have a mild flavor and firm texture. Grown in Idaho, these beans are 1/4" long and are pill-shaped, like a giant grain of rice. Their uniform ivory white color and unique shape make it hard to believe they're really beans.
The English language name is a literal translation of the Chinese language name (Chinese: 米豆; Hanyu Pinyin: mǐdòu)
A sprawling, legume bush 30-75cm tall, with trailing stems 1- 2 metres long. Trifoliate hairy leaves to 10cm long, grow thick on the stems providing a very dense coverage on the plant. Clusters of bright yellow pea flowers make a bright display, followed by groups of 5-12 round pods to 10cm long, with 7-10 smooth seeds per pod. There are a number of varieties, varying from short-stemmed bushes to more erect plants, with differing colour seeds, which can be yellow, brown or mottled, all about the size of a grain of rice.
Slender twining vine; drought-tolerant; needs well-drained soils; often intercropped with rice. There are both climbing and bush types of rice bean. It can be grown as an annual or perennial. The bush variety can be 30-75 cm tall. Trifoliate leaves grow thick on the stems providing a dense ground cover. Yellow flowers are followed by round pods in heavy producing groups of 5-12 about 10 cm long. The plants require short days to flower. Seeds are ready for harvest 90-120 days after planting depending on the time of year.
Sow seeds in full sun. Provide a support as plants grow. Plant about 18- to 24-inches apart. Keep soil evenly moist. Young pods and leaves can be eaten fresh or allowed to mature and dry on the vine before picking.
Vegetable Seed Saving: Allow bean pods to dry on plant; then break them open to collect the large bean seeds. Clean and dry the seeds before storage in cool dry
